The story begins in 1730, when Johann Christian Häntzschel from Schandau had the spring of the Röten Flößgen in the Kirnitzschtal valley captured. The water, which contained iron and copper, was soon called Schandau's Gesundbrunnen and from 1750 was also used for bathing. In 1799, the merchant Gottfried Hering built a bathhouse where heated healing water flowed through wooden pipes into the basins of eight bathrooms.

The reputation of the healing effect attracted more and more guests even then. In the second half of the 19th century, the hotelier and entrepreneur Rudolf Sendig arranged for several new pension villas to be built in the town area and laid out the spa park. Thus, Schandau developed into a trendy health resort. In 1920 Bad Schandau received the title of spa and since 1936 the town has been allowed to call itself a Kneipp spa

There are five pillars that can heal us and keep us healthy. This is what the holistic approach of Sebastian Kneipp (1821-1897) promises. His concept is based on the interplay of five elements that stimulate the body's self-healing powers and strengthen health.

water applications

The power of water awakens and strengthens our life forces.

The first pillar is also the most well-known part of Kneipp therapy.

Harmonizing baths, wraps and affusions with cold or warm water have a healing effect on the organism.

hydrotherapy

The cool water of the Kirnitzsch feeds a pedal system in our spa park.

The Ostrau spa promenade offers the opportunity for a refreshing arm bath.

The Elbe meadows are particularly good for stepping out in the morning dew.

In the Toskana thermal baths, brine thermal water awaits you in the liquid sound temple.

Movement

Gentle sport in the fresh air revitalizes us.

This does not mean top performance, but conscious movement with moderation.

Hiking, cycling, swimming, walking or gymnastics create physical and mental balance.

Barefoot walking or massages are also part of this pillar.

kinesitherapy

The Elbe sandstone nature around Bad Schandau is perfect for hiking and cycling tours.

The spa terrain trails and the Ostrau barefoot trail are nice alternatives right in the city area.

Or how about a canoe tour on the Elbe followed by a relaxing massage?

nutrition

Eating healthy is a pleasure.

According to Kneipp, balance and variety on the table are key to our health.

Wholesome and fresh food made from regional products provides essential nutrients, vitamins, minerals and trace elements.

Therapeutic fasting has a particularly regenerating effect on our organism.

dietetics

Regionality and high-quality ingredients are a matter of course for most restaurants in Saxon Switzerland.

medicinal plants and herbs

Healing and prevention with nature's green pharmacy.

Many native plants develop their healing powers when used internally or externally.

The targeted use of healing herbs and plants can naturally alleviate many ailments.

With this column, Kneipp continued the traditional knowledge of the monasteries with their gardens.

phytotherapy

Even the small herb garden in the spa park shows something of the abundance of nature.

Whoever visits the botanical garden, walks through magnificent richness.

In addition to medicinal plants, there are many specimens of the native flora here.

order of life

Achieve mindfulness and inner balance.

Inner order is an indispensable part of Kneipp therapy.

What sounds difficult can be learned step by step through simple exercises in mindfulness.

Mental balance, stress reduction and balanced social relationships are part of a healthy lifestyle.

pillar of harmony

Even a hike in which we consciously feel every step and breath creates inner balance.

Physical and mental yoga exercises also lead to harmony and self-knowledge.

Every Thursday morning there is an open yoga class in the Elbresidenz.

The Aktiv Zentrum offers yoga in combination with hiking or climbing.

Just try!

Relax and enjoy holistic treatments - a gift for body and soul. Wellness offers as well as beauty and body care do not only increase the well-being. We do something good for our health when we feel good and let ourselves be pampered. Positive energies refresh and revitalize our inner and outer being.

Many hotels have a spa area with exclusive offers. Relaxing massages in the Asian tradition, scented baths or revitalizing cosmetic treatments are just three examples of a rich selection.

All types of fasting cures are based on the principle of omission. The complete, partial or temporary renunciation of solid food or certain foods has a health-promoting effect. Inner peace and sharpened senses are positive consequences of fasting. Cleansing processes begin in the body that keep us healthy and can have a regenerating effect on certain illnesses.

Probably the most well-known fasting method is Buchinger's therapeutic fasting, in which solid food is completely avoided and only water, tea, juices and clear vegetable broth are consumed. With base fasting, only acid-forming foods are avoided. Intermittent fasting is based on a daily period of 16 hours or one or two days per week without eating solid food.

In Bad Schandau, those interested can take part in accompanied fasting cures in the Hotel Elbresidenz at the Bad Schandau thermal baths, in the Falkenstein Clinic or in the Dirk Huxol naturopathic practice. The supervised courses enable exchange with like-minded people and usually offer supportive wellness offers or a suitable supporting program such as guided hikes or yoga.
