At the beginning of the 14th century, German settlers founded a trading post on an alluvial cone at the confluence of the Kirnitzsch and the Elbe. Schandau was first mentioned in a document in 1430 and in 1445 it was called a town. From the 16th to the 18th century, it developed into an important trading center for Elbe trade.
From the 19th century tourism gained in importance. First came travelers from the bourgeoisie, from 1837 steamships and from 1851 the railway laid the foundation for mass tourism. At the same time, spa operations increased. In 1920, Schandau was given the title of Bad and in 1936 it was awarded the title of Kneipp spa. In the years from 1950 the city developed into a state-approved resort.
Today Bad Schandau is the tourist center in Saxon Switzerland. The diverse range of accommodation, the good infrastructure and the perfect location for excursions, as well as a modern spa and bathing establishment, attract many guests to the city every year.
